German researchers reported that a combination of folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 reduced intima-media thickness of the carotid artery in men and women at risk of cerebral ischemia. Measurement of carotid artery intima-media thickness is used to determine the presence and extent of atherosclerosis. Thickening of these layers of the artery is associated with a greater extent of the disease.
